Ethical Hackers Prove Their Mettle in EC-Council’s Ransomware/Malware Analysis Competition

Certified ethical hackers competed with peers from around the world to secure top positions on the C|EH Compete leaderboard as part of the January C|EH challenge, Ransomware/Malware analysis, organized by EC-Council, the creator of the world’s leading ethical hacking certification. Tampa, Florida, February 1, 2023–As part of the curriculum, certified ethical hackers took part in the January C|EH Compete by EC-Council, a global hacking competition that assesses a candidate’s ethical hacking skills through 4-hour capture the flag style competitions. The January challenge was based on ransomware/malware analysis and required candidates to prove their skills in extracting ransomware codes from a company’s compromised system. Participants battled against peers globally to secure the top position in the C|EH Compete leaderboard. The challenge presented a scenario where a group of hackers hijacked an MNC’s technology management software, embedded it with sophisticated ransomware, and leveraged its software to encrypt files in all customer systems simultaneously. The candidates’ mission was to reverse engineer the ransomware, detect encryption algorithms and spot any trace of remote command and control sources that may be beneficial to law enforcement agencies. The C|EH Compete global challenge is a monthly event that introduces new challenge themes to help candidates stay updated on the latest ethical hacking skills, processes, and vulnerabilities. The challenges are carefully curated and expose participants to various technologies and platforms such as web applications, OT, IoT, SCADA, ICS systems, cloud environments, and more. “C|EH competitions are crucial to building industry-level ethical hacking skill sets. Candidates compete against peers globally in EC-Council’s online cyber range and leverage scenario-based engagements to hone their critical thinking abilities. ITE Singapore’s Faculty Clears the World’s Most Advance Penetration Testing Course – the C|PENT

Singapore, January 20, 2023: Yeoh Chai Yeow, a Certified EC-Council Instructor (CEI) and Faculty at the Institute of Technical Education (ITE) Singapore, becomes the first in ITE to clear the most challenging pen testing course – the Certified Penetration Testing Professional (C|PENT) from EC-Council. ITE Singapore is an accredited training centre in Singapore for EC-Council, the world’s leading cybersecurity training and certification provider. Chai Yeow, is a Senior Lecturer with the Higher Nitec in Cyber & Network Security course at the School of Electronics & Info-Comm Technology in ITE College West and is now among the handful of C|PENTs in Singapore. The C|PENT is one of the most challenging exams to crack and has been labelled by the most accomplished professionals as extremely difficult. Sharing his experience with the C|PENT, Chai Yeow says, “It was challenging as I do not have much experience in binary exploitation, IoT, and OT. Due to the wide range of scopes, it took me months to understand the material and try out the respective labs. The practice range has helped me to understand and familiarize myself more with the exam range.” Furthermore, Chai Yeow also shares a few key takeaways from the C|PENT, “Think out of the box and try harder. At times, a machine’s vulnerabilities and attack surfaces are due to minor mistakes or misconfigurations.” Chai Yeow is open to teaching the programme at ITE. With C|PENT training at ITE, students can understand proper penetration methodology via a realistic network set-up. There is a massive shortage of skilled cybersecurity workforce to tackle the escalating cybercrimes globally. EC-Council Announces 2022 Academia Award Winning Cybersecurity Instructors

Nation’s Top Cybersecurity Instructors Discuss Evolution of Teaching, the Cyber Jobs Gap, and Diversity TAMPA, Fla, Jan. 12, 2023– EC-Council announced today its 2022 Academia award winning instructors of the year. The five honored instructors include a diverse group of teachers from academic institutions of higher education across the United States, chosen from over 500 different institutions that provide cybersecurity education. “Training the next generation of cybersecurity leaders is critical in a nation where as many as half of all cyber jobs are currently unfilled. Nothing is more important to that education than the quality and commitment of our nation’s cybersecurity instructors,” said Wesley Alvarez, Director of Academics at EC-Council. “This year’s winners reflect a high level of innovation and adaptability in their teaching, which is vital to produce cyber leaders who are ready to respond to new and evolving cyber threats.” Award recipients are selected based on the nominee’s impact on teaching, an assessment of their instruction, student experiences, leadership, and engagement with the cybersecurity community at large. The winners include the Academia Instructor of the Year award, issued to Dr. Diego Tibaquirá of Miami Dade College (Miami, FL); and five Instructor Circle of Excellence Awards, issued to Nicole Dyess of Eastern Florida State College (Cocoa, FL); Larry Atkinson of Lorain County College (Elyria, OH); Christopher Hope of Southern Crescent Technical College (Griffin, GA); Greg Hirsch of Vincennes University (Vincennes, IN). Evolution in Teaching Approach These award-winning educators spoke about how teaching pedagogy has evolved in the past years, with an emphasis on hands-on training, competency-based education, and other types of practical learning enabling students to move beyond knowledge acquisition and into the development of real skills immediately applicable to today’s workplace. “Taking a hands-on approach, I have to ensure that students are aware not just of textbook information, but current issues and the resolution that can be taken,” said Christopher Hope. “I like the gamification approach to teaching,” said Nicole Dyess. Dyess goes on to say, “Rather than focusing on testing, my approach is to give them hands-on professional development opportunities. Capture the Flag competitions are another important teaching method which I’ve found to be a valuable tool to level up students quickly.” Addressing the Cybersecurity Workforce Gap Instructors and their students are acutely aware of the national cybersecurity workforce gap. According to industry sources, there are nearly half a million open positions in the U.S. alone. “I think there is such a shortage of students entering the STEM disciplines as it is,” said Larry Atkinson. Atkinson goes on to say, “We must create new and state of the art programs and advertise those to our new generation of students.” Dr. Diego Tibaquirá, Academia Instructor of the Year, elaborated, “We need to start at the high school level, middle school level, and even elementary school level. We must educate the entire population on the risks and need for the field of cybersecurity.” Improving Diversity Another key theme that arose in conversations with these top cybersecurity instructors is the matter of diversity. “As a woman in the field of information systems for over 20 years, it has often been a lonely journey. I understand the difficulties in balancing a family with school and work. I encourage all my students to always put their family first, but also remind them that by improving their skills and participating in Capture the Flags, they are in fact doing the best possible thing for their family. Students who can get employment in this industry will help secure their financial future and provide the best life possible for them.” said Nicole Dyess. Still, there are signs of progress. Most of the instructors spoke about improvements in the representation of women in their classes. “In one of my cybersecurity classes this semester, almost half of the class were females,” said Dr. Diego Tibaquirá. “Our numbers have grown, but there must be a real, direct, and intentional approach to get those numbers up.” EC-Council Academia honors leading instructors and programs annually through the EC-Council Academia Partner Awards. In addition to the 2022 faculty awards, leading cybersecurity programs including Western Governors University, University of Maryland Global Campus, University of Phoenix, ECPI University, Forsyth Technical Community College, Maryville University, Collin College, and Queen’s College of Business, Technology & Public Safety (Lambton College in Mississauga), were highlighted for their outstanding efforts and commitment to cybersecurity education this past year. A one-of-a-kind information security program, C|CISO aims to build top-level cybersecurity executives of the highest caliber and merit. This certification is curated with contributions from the C|CISO Advisory Board and helps existing and aspiring CISOs advance their career in information security and sharpen business insight. It is undoubtedly one of the most popular certifications at Wissen today and is being opted for by emerging cyber leaders across the country. To tackle evolving business needs, chief security officers must have high adaptability to deal with new policies, technologies, and emerging threat patterns. C|CISO incorporates wargaming sessions in live classes to help candidates build critical decision-making skills and enhance their experience in incident handling. Jay Bavisi, the CEO and President of EC-Council says, “Unlike other security management certifications, emphasizing middle management, the C|CISO certification aims to upgrade middle managers to the executive level. Japanese Ethical Hacker Tops in the Outdated / Unpatched Software Competition by EC-Council

As part of their ethical hacking training program, EC-Council, the industry pioneer in cybersecurity training and certification, gives ethical hackers a chance to show their mettle in the C|EH Compete Global Challenge: unpatched/outdated software detection & remedy. Tampa, Florida, December 1, 2022: The ‘C|EH Compete’ challenge for December, organized by EC-Council, brought together certified ethical hacker (C|EH) aspirants from around the world to compete against each other. Participants had to prove their caliber in the 4-hour capture-the-flag style competition by overcoming challenges and racing against some of the top ethical hackers worldwide. In this competition, each participant was required to demonstrate expertise and hands-on skills in all the phases of the ethical hacking life cycle, including footprinting, reconnaissance, scanning networks, enumeration, vulnerability analysis, and system hacking. The challenge required candidates to employ red team techniques such as deep network reconnaissance, vulnerability and exploit research, SSH cracking, exploitation of outdated/unpatched applications, etc., to gain unauthorized elevated access to the target and exfiltrate sensitive business information. Candidates were given a scenario and were required to recreate the path attackers took to perform a remote code execution attack (RCE) in an organization’s Java-based billing system. The challenge tested the candidates’ skills in identifying outdated/unpatched software with a situation-based engagement where the attacker exploited a zero-day vulnerability, gaining unauthorized access to the company’s database and billing system. Participants demonstrated their skill in detecting similar vulnerabilities and recommending effective countermeasures in other systems of the organization. The ‘Compete’ methodology of the new C|EH framework was designed to enable trainees to put their skills to actual use. This methodology includes the global C|EH Compete Leaderboard that helps students fight for the top ranks by countering dynamic challenges and beating their peers worldwide. Hironari Saito from Japan won the top place in the December C|EH Challenge. Thomas Siegbert from Germany came in second, and Prajwal A from India took third. EC-Council proudly congratulates its Accredited Training Centers, CECyber in Brazil, XEDUCONET in Singapore, and Systex Corporation Systex in Taiwan, for providing their students with the highest quality C|EH training and enabling them to make it to the top 10 C|EH December Global Challenge Leaderboard. ‘EC-Council constantly strives to build skilled, ethical hackers through the C|EH program, which offers candidates an opportunity to evaluate their skills by competing with peers globally. The challenges are curated to test a candidate’s knowledge of ethical hacking processes, current skills, and critical thinking abilities. With a scenario-based approach, students get the exposure to demonstrate their aptitude in tackling emerging security vulnerabilities,’: said Jay Bavisi, President and CEO of the EC-Council Group. The ‘Compete’ phase of the C|EH v12 course is designed to equip the candidates to face real-world challenges and gain a deep understanding of the current skills, new attack vendors, and the latest hacking tools. The themes reflect contemporary cybersecurity challenges and allow aspiring professionals to encounter dynamic challenges, covering aspects from malware to service exploitation, web application attacks, SCADA and ICS systems, and more. Certified Ethical Hackers Hack Computer Systems and Escalate Privileges as Part of a Global Ethical Hacking Competition

Croatian Ethical Hacker takes the top spot in the Global Ethical Hacking Challenge. The C|EH Compete Challenge, organized by EC-Council, the world leader in cybersecurity training and certification, brought together aspiring information security professionals from all over the world to compete against one another and earn recognition as part of their ethical hacker training. Tampa, Florida, December 1, 2022 — EC-Council hosted the Certified Ethical Hacker (C|EH) Competition for November, in which aspiring cybersecurity professionals who are preparing to become Certified Ethical Hackers battled each other on EC-Council’s proprietary patented cyber range, Cyber Q. The Global Certified Ethical Hacker Compete Challenge is a four-hour Capture the Flag (CTF) style competition, and the November 2022 competition was based on system hacking and privilege escalation, where candidates raced to beat other competitors to make it to the top 10 on the global leaderboard. In January 2022, Crypto.com was compromised, and hackers stole more than $30 million in bitcoin. In November 2022, FTX, a leading crypto exchange, collapsed after more than $600 million was siphoned from FTX’s crypto wallets due to a possible hack. This is one of many examples of the impact of cybersecurity risks that organizations face today. These risks accentuate the need to rapidly develop ethical hacking skill sets worldwide. The Global C|EH Leaderboard platform promotes the development of hands-on skills for the cybersecurity community and tests the mettle of Certified Ethical Hackers. We also recognize the accomplishments of these aspiring ethical hackers through the C|EH Compete series. EC-Council proudly congratulates its Accredited Training Centers, ACADI-TI in Brazil, Wissen International in Singapore, and XEDUCONET in Romania, for providing their students with the highest quality C|EH training, enabling their students to make it to the top 10 C|EH November Global Challenge Leaderboard. Robert Petrunic from Croatia captured first place on the global leaderboard, followed closely by Daemon Gibson from the United States. Glauber Castelani from Brazil secured third place. Jay Bavisi, President and CEO of the EC-Council Group, says, “We wish to congratulate everyone who made it to the top 10 of the global ranking. The C|EH program prepares candidates to qualify for a variety of industry-specific job roles, and every participant must complete these challenges within 4 hours to demonstrate their skillset. C|EH Compete actively challenges candidates to demonstrate critical thinking skills gained through C|EH training and to put these skills to the test in the curated CTFs. The C|EH Compete framework is designed to provide candidates with hands-on experience and to keep their skills current.” In this competition, each participant is required to demonstrate a deep understanding of various system-level attack vectors and techniques, such as security misconfiguration, encoding schemes, privilege escalation, cryptography, command injection, and credential attacks. Successful conquest of this competition assures that the candidates possess high-level professional skills required for red teaming and pen testing assignments. The challenge requires each candidate to employ the complete system exploitation methodology from reconnaissance to lateral and vertical privilege escalation and data exfiltration. The November competition is part of a 12-month continuous training for Certified Ethical Hackers among the world’s elite cyber professionals. Participants access the latest technologies and platforms, including hacking web applications, OWASP Top 10, SCADA, ransomware analysis, cloud attacks, social engineering IoT hacking, DDoS attack, supply chain cyberattacks, etc. The ethical hacking industry presents a wide range of possibilities for growth. In its 12th edition, the C|EH provides a cutting-edge methodology called Learn, Certify, Engage, and Compete. After completing C|EH v12 training, candidates will participate in a 12-month global hacking competition using the Compete methodology. The C|EH Compete structure enables students to put their learning skills to the test through capture-the-flag style competitions against some of the world’s top ethical hackers. The Global C|EH Compete helps competitors refine their cyber skills against various new target organizations.
